Why Physical Education Online Could Be The Best Option for Your Child

Most of us know it’s important for our children to stay physically active. But if your high school student is feeling uncomfortable in the school gym, or simply has too many courses to fit it in, physical education (PE) online can be a great alternative.

Whether your child plans on switching to an online school or is interested in adding online courses to their regular schooling, here is a little more information to help you learn more.

How Physical Education Online Works

When students enroll in online PE, they are expected to keep a weekly log of activities such as exercises, diet and hear rates. Generally speaking, online instructors should also work one-on-one with the students to help them choose workouts they’re actually interested in to help students become their best selves, as Gabriel Garcia, PE instructor at Primavera Online High School, said.

“One of the best parts of physical education online is that students can customize what they want to do for exercise,” said Garcia. “Because of this, they are motivated to be physically active.”

What Students Learn

A big part of PE is not only being active, but also learning how to lead a healthy lifestyle. By taking an online course, students will learn about nutrition, exercise and how to stay physically and mentally healthy.

“The goal is to educate students about the best ways to live an active, healthy lifestyle,” said Garcia. As obesity rates rise with children, they need to understand that it is not just exercise that will help, but also what they eat. We also teach them about how exercise can increase their self-confidence, self-esteem and even reduce stress.”

Alyssa, a former student of Garcia’s, told us how students at her old middle school would harass her during her PE class, causing her to have low self-esteem and no longer want to be active. Once she switched to Primavera, she became motivated to exercise, and said she feels healthier and happier.

“I am choosing what exercises I am doing, where I do them and when I do them. At the beginning of this course, I barely even walked my dog. Now I bike again, I’m back on those long walks I loved as a kid, and come summer I’ll swim every other day at least,” said Alyssa. “Doing these things now has made me endlessly happy.”
