Students Carry Torch on 5K to Honor Martin Luther King Jr.

For the tenth year, local students have the honor of participating in the “Flame of Hope” Torch Run to officially open the Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Awards Breakfast. On Friday, January 15, students from Phoenix’s Edison Elementary School took part in the 5K Torch Run through downtown Phoenix.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is honored to once again be a sponsor of the torch run,” said Valerie Churchwell, Small Business Engagement Manager for the Phoenix Aviation Department. “This is the tenth year that students from one of our Airport neighborhood schools, Edison Elementary, have been featured in this event.”

The event began at 6:10 a.m. as participants depart City Hall, run west to the State Capitol, then east to the Talking Stick Resort Arena before arriving at the Sheraton Downtown Phoenix Hotel at 7:00 a.m. The students opened the annual breakfast with the presentation of the torch.
