St. Francis Xavier School fifth grade students participated in Junior Achievements BizTown, which is a learning experience that teaches students economic concepts, workplace skills, and personal and business finances in a student-sized town built just for them. Mrs. Katy Regester, fifth grade SFX teacher, incorporates BizTown into her social studies curriculum. During the in class lessons, the students explore career options, interview for jobs, create a business plan and design a marketing campaign. Local businesses that are part of Biztown are Cox Communications, US Airways, and Wells Fargo.
When students go to the BizTown campus, they have all been assigned their job positions. The students will then work as an employee on a business team, price and sell goods and services, open a bank account and mange their personal finances, practice responsible citizenship by voting and paying taxes, and implement a marketing campaign for their business. It is a full day; the students are there from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Mrs. Regester says she “loves the light bulb moment when the kids realize how hard it is to work in business environment, and all that goes into doing the job successfully. They leave Biztown completely exhausted, but very excited with all they achieved during their workday.”
