I have taken many programs in CTE such as Broadcasting, Business, Drafting and Manufacturing that have had a great impact on me during my years in high school. My freshman year, I heard about a club on campus called SkillsUSA. I was extremely into the filming and broadcasting program and this organization was a perfect fit for me to be involved in. During my sophomore year, I ran and was elected to be the SkillsUSA Region 5 Treasurer. That experience will always be something that I cherish, but I wanted to work more on the school level. I then proceeded to become president of our school’s SkillsUSA chapter during my junior year, and I was elected again this year. This past school year I attended the State SkillsUSA competition in Phoenix to compete in Job Interview and I won which allowed me to compete at Nationals in Kansas City, MO during the summer. Not only was a great experience, but I was proud to place 5th in the Nation for Job Interview.
What other activities are you involved in at EFHS?
Being involved in school is really important to me so I stay very busy with many clubs, activities and sports. CTSOs (Career and Technical Student Organizations) are a huge part of my high school career and I am currently a part of SkillsUSA and FBLA. I also play on the Varsity Golf team at EFHS and I am member of the National Honors Society and our World ranked Robotics Team at Estrella Foothills. I am very proud to serve as the current 1415 Vice-President for the EFHS Student Body.
What do you aspire to do when you grow up?
When I am older and in the work force, I plan to go into public relations and communications and then branching off from communications, I one day hope to go into political sciences.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to attend the local community college while maintaining a job, and after my two years there I plan to attend a university to achieve my bachelors degree(s).
What is your favorite thing about your school?
My favorite thing about EFHS is the school spirit! I have been our mascot ‘Wolfie’ a few times, but I mostly enjoy being in the stands with my friends at games, decked out in our colors, chanting ‘WOLVES the wolf pack, is the best, Woooo!!!’
Tell us about a great teacher that you have (past or present).
I have had so many amazing teachers in high school, but there’s one that truly sticks out in my mind. Mr. Gregg Pelka has been my broadcasting and business teacher, as well as one of my advisors for SkillsUSA. He has been the main teacher that has given me more confidence to step outside of my comfort zone and achieve all that I have with SkillsUSA and broadcasting.
What is your favorite subject in school?
My favorite subject in school is definitely broadcasting. Even though my future isn’t in filming, the hands on experience and communication that I have learned from this class will definitely help me in my future.
Billy is currently a senior at Estrella Foothills High School.
