When it comes to spelling, Aidan has had an unnatural gift. He just won his third spelling bee at Benchmark Elementary and is going on to compete regionally!
Congratulations on winning the school spelling bee, how do you feel?
I feel happy, and thankful that the school bee is over until next year.
This isn’t your first win, tell us about getting to this point.
I started in first grade. Once, when I went to McDonald’s, I saw Ronald McDonald and he asked me how to spell the name of my school. He asked because I had a shirt with the name of my school on it: Freedom Academy. He thought I would look at my shirt, except I didn’t. I spelled it right and Ronald was surprised. After first grade I moved to Benchmark, and in the class spelling bee for second grade I was runner up. In my third and fourth grade class bees, I got first place. And in fourth grade, I also moved up to the school spelling bee. I was not confident about victory, but somehow I managed to beat fifth and sixth graders. I remember feeling bad for the runner up, who was crying. In fourth grade after I won the school bee, I went to the regional bee. I made it through one round and then I missed a word due to not getting a list to study. In fifth grade, I think I was a bit over confident because of my previous victories. But I ended up winning again. I went back to the regional bee, and this time there was a list so I made it through four rounds before I missed a word. In sixth grade, I felt a bit under confident because I knew that everyone knew how good I was and I thought they might try to study extra hard and win. But I knew everyone was counting on me to win, so I tried my best and pulled through.
What happens next? Where do you go from here?
I have been studying for the regional bee again and I hope I will do better than last year. The regional bee is on February 19. I don’t know if the next school I go to will have a spelling bee, so I will just have to wait and find out.
What else do you like to do for fun?
I like to play games with my brothers, Camden and Bennet,t and have fun with them. I really like to play outside on scooters, or play four square or dodge ball. And I really love playing board games and card games. When I get the chance, it’s also fun to go hiking or exploring. And I like to build things.
What is your favorite thing about your school?
I love my school because the teachers are great and we have less homework than some schools. And I really like Mr. D’s math class.
Aidan is a sixth grader at Benchmark Elementary.
