Saint Thomas Aquinas Fifth Grader Heads to Region Five Spelling Bee

Fifth grader, Chema, traveled to the Arizona State Spelling Bee this year! He began his journey by winning the school spelling bee. Chema then went on to win both the Diocesan Spelling Bee and Region 5 Spelling Bee. Such awesome accomplishments for a fifth grader competing against older students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade!

Q. What inspired your passion for spelling?
A. I was inspired to continue when I won the class spelling bee and I thought I could win a high school scholarship if I won the Phoenix Diocesan Spelling Bee.

Q. What do you love about your school?
A. I love that everyone is very nice and that St. Thomas Aquinas is an academically and athletically focused school. Also, the whole school attends Mass every Tuesday during which I sing in the choir. Our pastor and principal are very supportive.

Q. Can you tell us about your family?
A. I have four half-sisters (who are in their 30s and live in NYC and LA), a dog and my parents. We like living here in Goodyear.

Q. What kinds of things do you like to do for fun?
A. I like to read, watch anime on TV, swim, and study spelling.

Q. What do you want to do when you grow up?
A. I don’t know yet!
