Meet the CEE ‘You Be The Chemist’ Team

Center for Educational Excellence recently sent a team to the 3rd Annual Arizona You Be the Chemist competition. The competition put on by the Chemical Educational Foundation was held on the ASU campus. CEF’s You Be The Chemist® programs are designed to enhance K-8 science education by introducing the central role of chemistry in all the sciences and in our everyday lives. To accomplish our mission, we rely on the collaboration of industry, educators, and all members of a community to enhance science education among every generation, beginning with our youth.

The students, Nicholas Matthews, Malia Oguma, Hayley Edwards, and Zackary Kauffman were accompanied by their teacher Mrs. Cheryl Hogan.

These students, along with others, also recently competed in a Junior High math competition put on by the math department at Chandler Gilbert Community College.

Q. How did you feel about being chosen to compete in the ‘You Be The Chemist’ challenge?

Malia: I was ecstatic about being chosen.

Hailey: Very excited to try a new kind of academic competition.

Nicholas: I was very excited.

Zack: I felt proud of myself for making it all the way since I have never competed in an academic competition before.

Q. What was your favorite part about the challenge?

Malia: My favorite part about the challenge was answering the questions.

Hailey: I loved experiencing a new environment and challenge with my friends.

Nicholas: Everything was so amazing that I really don’t have a favorite.

Zack: I’d say the consolation prize.

Q. What other subjects do you enjoy in school and why?

Malia: I also enjoy math because I have a math brain.

Hailey: I also enjoy music because I get to be creative and have fun.

Nicholas: Math, because it comes easy to me.

Zack: Social Studies. I like how events in the past affect the present.

Q. What else do you like to do for fun?

Malia: For fun, I like to act and be in drama productions.

Hailey: I participate in drama and show choir, I also like to play the piano and design costumes for fun.

Nicholas: I like to create machines in my free time.

Zack: I like to read, play video games, and play basketball or soccer.

Q. What do you want to be when you grow up?

Malia: So far, I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up, but I would like to be something out of the ordinary.

Hailey: I have no clue what I want to be when I grow up, but I do know that I will be something creative, fun, and maybe a bit out of the box.

Nicholas: I want to be a mechanical engineer.

Zack: I have not given it much thought. I do enjoy the creative writing we do in school though. So, maybe I will be a journalist or an author.
