Meet Emerald, Boys & Girls Club Talent Show Star

Emerald is a member of the Jerry & Helen Wisotsky/Peoria Branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix. The new big sister loves to sing, dance and draw and was the star of the Club’s summer talent show.

Q. How long have you been coming to the Club?

A. I started coming last year in the middle of the school year.

Q. What do you like to do when you come to the Club after school?

A. I like playing in the gym with the basketballs. I also like playing on the computers and reading books in the learning center. I like to play on a website called It’s a bunch of different fun games. I love the Heidi Heckelbeck books. It’s about a girl who goes to all these different places. I also like the Rainbow Fairy books.

Q. Who’s your favorite staff member at the Club?

A. Mr. Tim. He is really funny and tells really funny jokes.

Q. We heard you are a new big sister!

A. Yes, I have a new baby brother named Benjamin. My favorite part is holding him.

Q. Why did the Club nominate you to be in In The Zona?

A. Because of the Talent show! I sang “Rockin’ Robin.”

Q. Is that your favorite song to sing?

A. I like singing “Hound Dog.” One is Michael Jackson and one is Elvis. I like to dance too. When my dad plays the piano I like to dance in the kitchen.

Q. What do you want to do when you grow up? A singer?

A. No, I was thinking maybe a nurse because you can help all different types of people.

Q. What’s your favorite part of second grade?

A. Math! And the Daily Five. The Daily Five is where we do rotations, where we work on writing or self-reading and other stuff.

Q. What do you like most about math?

A. We are learning 10’s, 1’s, and 100’s. And right now, we are expanding them downwards and I like learning that.

Q. Anything else you would like readers to know about you?

A. I really like drawing. I like to draw people and owls in pencils and pen. I really like black and white stuff. I spend all of free time on Fridays in the art room.

Emerald Harold is a second grader at Peoria Elementary.
