Kelly Talks Theater and Community

Q. How long have you been participating in theater?

A. I have been doing theater since seventh grade, starting with Hairspray and West Side Story. And have been doing shows at James Madison since I arrived in ninth grade including, Ragtime, How to Succeed, Kiss Me Kate, and finally The Producers. I have also helped run props for the last two fall plays as well.

Q. What did you enjoy and do for your last musical?

A. I helped direct a lot of the music and was in almost every dance. I loved being in the dance numbers, and got to see what it was like being in charge of various groups helping with the music. I enjoyed the leadership it offered and discovered that there are times when you have to decide if you want to be a friend or get the job done. It was initially hard to find the balance, but once I did it was really satisfying.

Q. What other activities have you participated in?

A. I have participated in Sparx (our school’s danceline), Softball, Rock Band, Choir, Select Choir, and Show Choir.

Q. What has been your favorite part of being a senior?

A. That’s a tough one, but I’d have to say growing closer to the teachers and my senior class has been the best part. My class has had their differences, but we have bonded through the tough times and have started to realize that this is the last time we will get to be all together doing life. My other favorite part has been the community here at the school. At public schools you can’t connect with teachers the way you can here, there is a wall between the two. However, here my teachers have become my mentors and are always willing to talk and help, no matter what. I also love that as a school there is not as much of a divide between upperclassman and lowerclassmen, but instead we are all in this together.

Kelly is a senior at James Madison Preparatory School.
