Honors Given at Saint Thomas Aquinas

Congratulations to our eighth graders Isabel Gomez, Matthew Scheller, Jr., and Christy Tran who placed in Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest in the Tolleson Post. The essay was entitled “Why I appreciate America’s Veterans.” Great job Wildcats!

Q. How did you feel when you learned you placed in the VFW Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest?

A. Isabel: I was very surprised. I know that many people feel strongly about our veterans, so I was surprised that I won.

Matthew: I felt good knowing that I was representing my school as well as myself. Last year, I received third in the state level which was a nice honor. What was more amazing than receiving the award, was seeing so many of our veterans that support youth at the awards banquets. They are amazing men and women that I have much respect for.

Christy: I was very surprised and happy when I learned I received second place.

Q. What made you want to enter the contest?

A. Isabel: My grandfather was a Vietnam and Korean War veteran.

Matthew: Our teacher, Mrs. Webb, has the middle school do the Patriot’s Pen Contest as a writing assignment every year.

Christy: Mrs. Webb encouraged me to enter the contest.

Q. What other things do you enjoy besides writing?

A. Isabel: I also enjoy swimming. I am a competitive swimmer with the West Side Silverfins.

Matthew: I enjoy science and the math areas. I am looking forward to high school when I have the chance to really explore all subjects more in-depth.

Christy: Other things that I do besides writing is drawing.

Q. Any plans for the future?

A. Isabel: I am not sure yet but I know that I would like to find a career that will allow me to help others.

Matthew: I hope to attend Brophy College Preparatory in August.

Christy: When I grow up I want to be a doctor.

We also want to congratulate the STA middle school teachers who received the Xavier College Preparatory Golden Gator Award – Mrs. Gigette Webb who teaches middle school religion and seventh and eighth grade English, and Mrs. Kathleen Murphy who teaches sixth-eighth grade science and seventh grade Social Studies. These teachers were honored by their former students.

In addition to this, Mrs. Gigette Webb won second place awards in the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Citizenship Education Teacher Award. Mrs. Kathleen Murphy won the Arizona Cardinals MVP in the Classroom Award.

Isabel, Matthew and Christy are eighth graders at St. Thomas Aquinas.
