Geography Winner, Bryce, Loves to Travel to New Places

What makes Bryce a great kid is his strength is to bounce back from hardships and disappointments and really maintain a positive attitude. Bryce had cancer and lost a significant amount of his hearing so life is just harder for him. Luckily he doesn’t see it that way.

You recently won a geography bee, tell us about that.

My preparation mainly came from years of lifetime experiences. My dad has traveled all over the world and has told me about his many great adventures and how he has learned about people over the years. Through his travels and mine, I have been able to explore different cultures and people through the eyes of a 14 year old. Whenever my family plans a trip somewhere we spend time reading about the places we are going to visit. It helps to understand about a place before I go there. Another reason I have been able to excel at geography was because of my hearing loss. Due to this disability, I have to read lips. By reading lips, I am able to absorb more information than a normal person would just by hearing. It allows me to pay attention to nuances in speech and to be able to figure out what someone Is saying even if I have only heard a couple words in a sentence.

You must love to travel, where do you want to go next?

Throughout the years, I have always loved to learn about other places that most people may not know about and explore new places, cultures and foods. What I would like to do next, is travel around to different countries and see how they play baseball outside of the United States. The United States is such a small part of baseball and I would love to see other people play the game I love and maybe learn some new things along the way. These places include Japan, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic.

What other subjects do you enjoy and why?

I mostly enjoy math and science. These subjects are vital to understanding the world around me down to the last little detail. All of these tools are different ways to explore the world on different levels and from different perspectives.

What else do you enjoy doing outside of school?

Baseball is my passion. When I am not focused on my studies, I spend every possible moment either playing, practicing, or training for baseball. When I am not doing that, I am watching baseball, researching baseball history, and searching for every last ounce of baseball I can find. Besides baseball, I enjoy skiing and scuba diving.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I would love to be able to find a job in baseball. I would love to be a baseball manager for players. I love statistics and I love talking baseball. I like to be able to take the facts and try to find a pattern or connect them in a way that makes them more meaningful. One of our key family values is make the most of what you have.

Bryce is an eighth grader at Phoenix Country Day School.
