Gabriel Has Success Competing in Chess and Soccer

Gabriel is a kind person, a great student an avid chess player. Above all he is a hard worker.

We heard you are a pretty good chess player, how long have you been playing?

I’ve been playing for three years when I started chess club in kindergarten. That year I won 18th place at the Governor’s Cup in the kinder division. I’ve won a 14th place, eighth place and first place since then. This year when I was playing we won two team trophies for Benchmark, one fourth place and one 14th place at the Governor’s Cup. I really enjoy it because there is a lot of strategy involved, and it’s really fun when you win.

You also play soccer, how long have you been competing?

I’ve played competitive club soccer for Sereno going into my fourth year and played rec for two years before that. I’m on the White team and absolutely love playing. Most weeks I spend three to four days team training, have one private session with a trainer, and spend most of my free time working on moves. Our team does really well in league games as well as tournaments. We just won the Spring Break Invitational last month; that was really awesome.

What else do you like to do for fun?

I like to play with my brother and my twin sisters when I’m at home. I also love spending time with my friends from school and soccer. My iPad is one of my favorites. I’m also on minors for baseball which I have a lot of fun with too.

What is your favorite subject in school and why?

I have two favorites. Math because I like numbers and it comes pretty natural to me. I really love learning in Social Studies because I like understanding and knowing what has happened in the past.

What would you like to be when you grow up?

I really want to be a professional soccer player and play on Real Madrid. I got to walk on the field with them when I was six when they played in Phoenix against LA Galaxy. Ever since then they’ve been my favorite team and of course I love soccer.

Gabriel is a second grader at Benchmark Elementary.
