Four-Time Spelling Bee Winner, Jhelz Garcia

Jhelz is a unique name, what does it mean? How did you get that name? Actually my full name is Jhelz Anthonytte Andria. “Jhelz” is from my Mom’s name (Helzen Joy) – which is also a combination from my two maternal grandparents names – (Heles & Zeny), Anthonytte comes from my dad’s name (Anthony), and Andria is a combination from my two paternal grandparents names (Antonio & Adriana.) I have all their names combined because I’m the first grandchild on both sides.

You have a lot of hobbies tell me about them. I like to sing, draw, play piano, and ukulele.

Which is your favorite: singing, piano, or ukulele? I like singing most because it’s close to my heart and I’ve been singing longer than I’ve been playing instruments.

What is your favorite song to sing? Do you sing and play ukulele at the same time? Yes, I do play ukulele and sing at the same time. Currently my favorite song is “Let it Go” from the movie Frozen. (Check her out on Zona’s You Tube channel!)

Wow, you are a straight A student! How do you juggle your grades and your extra curricular’s? My parents disciplined me to put my studies in top priority and everything else just follows.

We hear that you are a 4-time spelling Bee winner. Tell us about that. I first won the spelling bee when I was in 4th grade and from then on, for 4 years now I still made it.

What is the hardest word that you have ever had to spell? The hardest word I’ve had to spell was “bourgeois” because it isn’t spelled how it is sounded.

How has Hillcrest helped you succeed academically? My teachers in Hillcrest are the best! They help in pushing me to always give my best foot forward in all my studies.

What do you want to be when you grow up and why? I would like to be a neuro-surgeon someday because I was inspired by the story of Dr. Ben Carson on how he had helped a lot of people.

If you had one super power what would it be? What good things would you do with this power? I want the power to heal people with one touch so that there will be no more sick people and everyone would always be happy.

Jhelz is currently a 7th Grader at Hillcrest Academy
