Five PCDS Seniors Selected as National Merit Semi-finalists

Five of the 64 members of the PCDS Class of 2016 have been named Semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition. As semi-finalists, these PCDS seniors will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for one of three possible scholarships, including National Merit $2500 Scholarships, corporate-sponsored merit scholarships, or college-sponsored merit scholarships.

The five Phoenix Country Day School Semi-finalists are Daniel Bashir, Tara Dugel, Philip Lewis, Anita Sheih, and Gaby Walton. They earned the designation of Semi-finalist after placing in the top one-percent of testers in last October’s PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. These five students are among the top scorers in the state of Arizona and nationally.

Since its founding in 1961, PCDS has been recognized by colleges and universities throughout the country for producing high-academic, well-rounded, and especially prepared graduates. In a given year, 100 percent of PCDS graduates are accepted to a four-year college or university, with approximately 75 percent of those graduates matriculating out-of-state. The most popular out-of-state destinations for the PCDS Classes of 2012-15 include USC, NYU, SMU, Wellesley, Brown, Harvard, U. Pennsylvania, Scripps, Claremont McKenna, Cornell, Duke, Occidental, University of California Berkeley, Georgetown, Tufts, and Yale. Over the past five years, PCDS has graduated 39 total National Merit Semi-finalists, representing 13 percent of its graduates during that span.

These five seniors are fantastic representations of our students’ interests and abilities— they’re varsity athletes, champion debaters, actors and robotics enthusiasts, and incredibly well-rounded young men and women. Director of College Counseling, Jessica Raab, notes: “It’s exciting to see our students recognized nationally. We are proud of their accomplishments and confident they will flourish as PCDS graduates.”

Please join us in congratulating Daniel, Tara, Philip, Anita, and Gaby on their accomplishment.
