Q. Tell us about your new position.
A. Coach Kris asked me to act as assistant coach for our varsity and junior varsity middle school basketball teams. I decided right away that I wanted the position because my grandfather and my father are coaches for a recreation league team (at Paradise Valley Community Center), so I knew what it entailed.
Q. What skills do you use as an assistant coach?
A. I put pressure on the players to hustle, move the ball, share the ball, and make the extra pass. I write down the stats for each player on my own scoresheet for each middle school varsity basketball game. During each game, I give my players pep talks on what to do on offense and defense. During practices, I show players what to do to get ready to shoot, how to follow through the shot, how to block and how to rebound. I enjoy watching the players keep improving their game every week. “My players are playing with all their hearts, and I expect to have a winning season,” says Porter.
Christian Porter is a junior at Jones-Gordon School.
