Camelback Desert School Teaches First Graders About Leadership

Camelback Desert School has been platforming leadership and responsibility this quarter. Here is what two first graders had to say:

Lily:

What does being a leader mean to you? Being brave, fair and caring.

What are you learning at school about leadership and responsibility? We are learning how to fix problems and sort out any disagreements.

What types of responsibilities do you have at home? At home I set and clear the table and make my bed everyday.  At the weekend I tidy my room.

What type of leadership roles do you have at school? When it is your turn to be leader of the day you:

       * pick what the class is going to write about in their journals

      * hand out equipment

      * pick centers – these are activities to do for fun

      * are the teacher’s assistant

What characteristics make up a good leader? You need to be a caring person, happy but sometimes upset.

What is the best thing about Camelback Desert School? My friends.

When you are out of school, what do you do for fun? Gymnastics

Tell our readers one thing about yourself that most people don’t know. I was born in the city of Chester, England!

Cyan:

What does being a leader mean to you? Being a leader to me means that you can solve problems, help others, teach people and have friendship with others.

What are you learning at school about leadership and responsibility? At Camelback Desert, they teach you to follow the rules and to be an example to the other students so you can understand leadership.  To teach responsibility, the teachers also give us “jobs” at the beginning of the week that we have to do and follow throughout the week to make sure everything is done correct.

What types of responsibilities do you have at home? At home, I make up my bed in the morning, fill up my sister and my water bottles for school, and most important help my sister with her homework, reading and helping her clean up her toys.

What type of leadership roles do you have at school? My leadership roles at school include helping my classmates if they need help with any schoolwork by being a teacher assistant, help with attendance, be a messenger, and be a playground assistant.

What characteristics make up a good leader? Being kind, understanding, and be able to solve problems.

What is the best thing about Camelback Desert School? I love a lot of things about Camelback Desert but mostly I love the friendships and relationships that I have made there with both my classmates and teachers over the years.

When you are out of school, what do you do for fun? When I am not at school, I like to build Legos, play with my sister and read fact or reference books.

Tell our readers one thing about yourself that most people don’t know. I am a huge Formula 1 racing fan.

What do you want to be when you grow up? An Entrepreneur.

Lily and Cyan are both First Graders at Camelback Desert School
