Benchmark Siblings Shine on Stage

Teagan, a Benchmark 6th grader, performs in theatre productions around the Valley.  Her most recent performances were the Spotlight Youth Theater’s production of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever and Lion King Jr. as one of the main characters, Zazu.

Teagan balances an intense after-school and weekend rehearsal schedule with a strong academic course load that includes participation in math and writing competitions, as well as dance and voice classes.

Her younger brother, Liam, a 3rd grader at Benchmark, has also started taking musical theatre classes and took the stage with his sister in Lion King Jr. as well!

Q. Can you tell us what it’s like to be a student at Benchmark?
Teagan: I like the competitive math class because I can work at my own, faster pace, and I enjoy getting to do creative writing in the competitive writing class.  The teachers are all really nice.

Liam: I really like the science and computer labs.  We do lots of fun experiments in the science lab.  My favorites are the ones about physics and aerodynamics.

Q. How many shows have you been in and what are some of your most recent roles?
Teagan: I have been in five shows over the past year, not including summer camps.  Most recently, I was Claudia Herdman in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever at Spotlight Youth Theatre and Zazu in Lion King Jr. with Limelight Performing Arts.

Q. What is your favorite role or show so far?
Teagan: Zazu in Lion King Jr. is my favorite so far even though the show was also the hardest I have ever worked — he is so funny and sarcastic, plus I got to do an accent.

Q. What math/writing competitions have you taken part in?
Teagan: Through my writing class at Benchmark, I have entered several poetry contests and a few essay contests, including one on the end of World War I.  In math, I have participated in several continental math and math olympiad contests throughout the last few years.

Q. What do you like most about working with your brother/ sister on stage?
Teagan: Lion King is the only show we’ve done together so far, but it was helpful that he could take notes for me when I had to miss a rehearsal because I was performing in another show.

Liam: Since this was my first big show, it was nice that she knows a lot about how shows work.

Q. What do you like to do for fun, outside of school/ theater?
Teagan: Singing, reading, and creating my own stories.

Q. Who is your biggest influence?
Teagan: Emma Stone is my role model because she used acting to help her deal with anxiety when she was a kid in Arizona, just like I do.

Liam: My dad is my biggest influence.

Q. What do you like best about being in theatre?
Liam: I really like learning choreography and being so active.  I also make a lot of new friends.

Q. What do you want to be when you grow up?
Liam:  I want to be a programmer and instructor at a software company or design video games.

Q. Are you involved in any other activities or sports?
Liam:  I take swim lessons and a musical theater dance class.

Teagan is a sixth grader and Liam is a third grader at Benchmark.
